Favourably located near the Alps in the Bernese Oberland, the Lake of Thun with its mild climate has always held a special attraction. The nobility of the past valued the location and built their castles and palaces on the shores of the lake.
From their castle in Thun, the Zähringers and Kyburgers ruled the area around the lake. Bernese aristocratic families acquired the castles of Oberhofen and Spiez and turned them into prestigious country residences.
With the emergence of tourism in the 19th century, nobles, bankers and industrialists were attracted to Lake Thun and the castles of Schadau and Hünegg were built. Alongside the three older castles they form a unique ensemble, complementing the majestic Alpine panorama.
